For babies: keep the sound low (about 50 dB, as quiet as a fridge) and put the phone at least 2 m (7 ft) from the crib. For everyone: keep the volume low when you listen for hours.

This white noise generator plays white, pink, and brown noise, plus rain, ocean, wind, fan, fire, and stream sounds, right in your browser. Mix them your own way with a volume slider for each one, then save up to 10 hours of your mix as a free MP3.

How to Make Your Own Noise Mix in 3 Steps

  1. Tap a sound tile to start it, then slide its volume up or down. Tap more tiles to add rain, ocean, wind, fan, fire, or stream on top.
  2. Or skip the tiles and pick a ready-made blend from the "Mix" dropdown, such as Deep sleep or Rainy night.
  3. Set a "Sleep timer" if you want the sound to stop on its own. To save a copy, pick a "Length" under Save as MP3, press "Make MP3", then press "Download MP3".

Tap any playing tile again to remove that sound from the mix. The player remembers your mix the next time you open the page on that device.

White, Pink, or Brown Noise: What Is the Difference?

White, pink, and brown noise differ in how loud the high pitches sound compared to the low ones. White has the most high-pitched hiss, pink has less, and brown has almost none.

SoundHow it soundsGood for
WhiteEvery pitch at the same loudness, a bright hiss like TV static or a fan on highBlocking sudden sounds such as traffic or talking
PinkSofter and less hissy, closer to steady rain, since the high pitches fade out a littleA gentler background for reading or working
BrownA low rumble like a waterfall or heavy wind, with almost no hiss leftPeople who find white noise too sharp or bright

Pink noise loses about 3 dB of loudness (the unit for loudness) with each octave up, an octave being a doubling of pitch. Brown noise falls faster, about 6 dB per octave, which is why it sounds so much deeper than white noise.

None of the three is better than the others for everyone. Many people simply find one more comfortable to listen to for hours, so try each tile and see which one you reach for.

Mix Rain, Ocean, Fan, and Fire With the Noise

Besides the three noise colors, six ambient sounds sit on their own tiles: rain, ocean, wind, fan, fire, and stream. Each one plays through the same kind of loop as the noise colors, with its own volume slider. That means you can build a mix from scratch, sound by sound.

We checked every sound at full slider with a broadcast loudness meter, a tool that measures how loud sound feels to your ear. All nine sounds measure -14 LUFS (a standard loudness scale), so adding a new sound never jumps out over the ones already playing.

If you would rather start from something already built, open the "Mix" dropdown for eight ready-made blends:

  • White noise: White at 60%
  • Baby sleep: Pink at 55%
  • Deep sleep: Brown at 70% plus Rain at 30%
  • Rainy night: Rain at 70% plus Brown at 25%
  • Focus: Pink at 45% plus Stream at 35%
  • Ocean calm: Ocean at 70% plus Wind at 20%
  • Fireplace: Fire at 70% plus Wind at 15%
  • Airplane cabin: Brown at 65% plus Fan at 45%

Pick any of these as a starting point, then drag the sliders to fit your own ear. Your changes count as "Your own mix" in the dropdown.

Download 10 Hours of White Noise as a Free MP3

Pick a "Length" under Save as MP3, press "Make MP3", and press "Download MP3" once the file is ready. The download holds your exact mix, whatever sounds and sliders you have set.

LengthFile size
10 minutes9.2 MB
30 minutes27.5 MB
1 hour54.9 MB
2 hours110 MB
3 hours165 MB
8 hours439 MB
10 hours549 MB

Every file is a 128 kbps MP3 at 48 kHz, saved in stereo. Kbps means how much sound data is packed in per second, a normal amount for music. kHz counts how many samples of sound the file holds each second.

Each file opens with a 5-second fade in and closes with a 30-second fade out, so it never starts or stops with a jolt. The tool also works fast, because it only encodes 3 minutes of sound and repeats the middle minute to fill the rest.

On our test computer the first file was ready in about 5 seconds, and a 10-hour file took about 4 seconds. The first one also waits for the MP3 encoder to load, and phones are slower than a computer.

There is no email, no signup, and no limit on how many files you make. If an 8 or 10 hour file feels too big for your phone's storage, you can make the file smaller after you download it.

We tested this ourselves before writing any of these numbers. In a downloaded 10-minute file, each repeated minute matched the next one exactly, sample for sample, with no click at the join. A 10-hour download also opened as exactly 10 hours long, no more and no less.

If you want to speak over the sound, you can put the noise under a voice recording you already made. This works well for a bedtime story, a guided rest track, or just a video.

Sleep Timer and Lock Screen

Open the "Sleep timer" dropdown for Off, 5, 7, 10, 15, 30, or 45 minutes, or 1, 2, 3, or 8 hours. Instead of cutting off all at once, the sound fades out slowly over the last minute.

If you pause the player for less than 5 minutes, the timer keeps counting down where it left off instead of starting over. That means a short break to check your phone does not cost you the whole timer.

The sound keeps playing after your phone screen locks, and you can play or pause it right from the lock screen.

Each sound is a 60-second loop, but the player gets one 2-hour file made of that loop repeated end to end. That way you never hear the small gap a browser leaves when it jumps back to the start of a clip.

Is White Noise Safe for Babies?

White noise can be safe for babies, but only at a low volume and some distance away. A 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics measured 14 infant sleep machines. At 30 cm (about a foot) on full volume, every one was louder than 50 dB, the limit for hospital newborn rooms.

Two simple rules keep a machine or phone in the safer range. Keep the volume down to about 50 dB, roughly as quiet as a fridge running. Also place the phone at least 2 m (7 ft) from the crib, not right beside it.

This page is not medical advice. Read the 2014 Pediatrics study yourself, and ask your baby's doctor if you have any concerns.

Does White Noise Really Help You Sleep?

White noise cannot fix sleep problems, but it can help in a simple way called masking. It raises the background noise level in the room, so a car door or a snoring partner stands out less against it. That is plain physics, not anything special about noise machines.

A 2021 review of 38 studies by Riedy and colleagues, published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, looked at whether continuous noise actually improves sleep. It found the evidence was very low quality overall, with some studies showing a benefit and others showing noise disturbed sleep instead. Read the 2021 review for the full picture.

The honest takeaway is that plenty of people like sleeping with noise on, and it is worth trying for yourself. It is not a treatment for a real sleep problem, so talk to a doctor if sleep keeps being hard. You can also try binaural beats for sleep on our sister page.

Made in Your Browser, Nothing Uploaded

Nothing leaves your device. There is no sound file to upload in the first place, because your browser builds every noise and ambient sound itself. The MP3 file is put together in your browser too, not on a server somewhere else.

Your mix is saved only inside your own browser on your own device, with no account and no signup anywhere on the page.

White Noise Generator FAQ

Is brown noise better than white noise for sleep?

Brown noise is not better, it is just deeper and less hissy than white noise. People who find white noise too sharp often prefer it, but that is comfort, not a proven sleep benefit.

Can I download 10 hours of white noise for free?

Yes, pick 10 hours under "Length," press "Make MP3", then press "Download MP3" once it finishes. The finished file is about 549 MB and holds your exact mix, with a 5-second fade in and a 30-second fade out.

Does the sound keep playing when my screen is off?

Yes, the sound keeps playing after your phone screen locks, and playback controls stay on the lock screen so you can pause it there. The sleep timer keeps counting while the screen is off, and the sound still fades out at the end.

Can I use it without the internet?

The page itself needs an internet connection to load, since it is a website and not an installed app. Once you download an MP3 file, though, that file plays completely offline in any music app, anywhere you go.

What quality is the MP3?

Every download is a 128 kbps MP3 at 48 kHz in stereo, the same technical quality as a normal music file. It holds your exact mix, sounds, and slider settings, not some generic preset.
