How to Make Binaural Beats in 4 Steps

  1. Pick a goal under "Choose a goal": Deep Sleep, Meditate, Relax, or Focus.
  2. Put on headphones, then tap "Test left / right" to make sure the left tone plays in your left ear.
  3. Press "Play" to start the sound. Change "Background" and "Background level" for the noise, and set a "Sleep timer" if you want it to stop on its own.
  4. To save a copy, pick a "Length", press "Make MP3", then press "Download MP3" when it is ready.

On a computer or Android phone, a volume slider sits under the Play button. On an iPhone, use your phone's volume buttons instead, because iPhone browsers ignore a web page's volume setting.

What Are Binaural Beats?

Binaural beats happen when each ear hears its own steady tone, and the two tones are a few Hz apart. Hz means how many times a sound wave repeats each second. On the Deep Sleep setting, your left ear hears 248.5 Hz and your right ear hears 251.5 Hz.

Your brain hears the 3 Hz difference as a slow, soft pulse, about 3 beats every second. The pulse is made inside your head, not in the sound itself, so you need headphones or earbuds.

Through speakers, the two tones mix in the air before they reach you, so both ears get the same sound. You may still hear a wobble, but that is a different effect from a binaural beat.

Which Binaural Beat Frequency Should You Choose?

Each goal is based on published research. Here are the exact settings behind each one.

Deep Sleep uses the same 3 Hz beat on a 250 Hz tone as a 2018 sleep study. In that small study, people got about 35 more minutes of deep sleep on the night the beat played while they slept.

Meditate copies a 2017 study that used a 6 Hz beat on a 250 Hz tone, where brain activity was strongest after about 10 minutes. Relax uses a 400 Hz tone, because hearing research found that people hear the beat most clearly at 400 to 500 Hz.

Focus uses a fast 40 Hz beat, the speed used in several attention studies. A 2025 study found that a fast beat on a lower 340 Hz tone, with white noise behind it, improved attention.

Brainwaves are tiny electrical rhythms in your brain, and scientists group them into bands by speed. Delta, under 4 Hz, is linked with deep sleep. Theta, 4 to 8 Hz, is linked with drowsy, dreamy states and meditation.

Alpha, 8 to 13 Hz, is linked with feeling relaxed but awake. Beta, 13 to 30 Hz, and gamma, above 30 Hz, are linked with alert, focused thinking. Playing a beat in a band does not promise that state of mind.

For a beat of your own, open "Advanced: set your own Hz" below the Sleep timer. Set the Beat from 0.5 to 40 Hz and the Base tone from 80 to 500 Hz. The tool shows the exact left and right tones as you move them.

Pink, Brown, or White Noise: Which Background Is Best?

White noise has every pitch at the same loudness, so it sounds like a bright hiss from a fan or TV static. Pink noise is softer and less hissy, more like steady rain.

Brown noise is the deepest of the three, a low rumble like a waterfall or strong wind. Deep Sleep uses brown noise, Meditate and Relax use pink noise, and Focus uses soft white noise. Pick None to hear only the two tones.

Background noise covers small room sounds and makes the plain tones feel softer. A 2019 review of 22 studies found that added noise was not needed for the effects it measured. So the noise here is just for comfort, and you can pick whichever sound you like best.

Each goal keeps the noise quiet, so it never covers up the beat. In our tests, the tones came out 14 to 16 dB (the unit for loudness) above the noise, which puts them clearly in front.

Binaural Beats for Sleep: Timer, Fade-Out, and Lock Screen

The Sleep timer turns the sound off after 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes, or you can leave it on Off. Instead of stopping all at once, the sound fades out slowly over the last minute. For Deep Sleep, pick 60 minutes or Off, since the 2018 study kept the beat playing while people slept.

If you pause for less than 5 minutes, the timer keeps its countdown instead of starting over. The sound also keeps playing when your phone screen locks, and you can play or pause it from the lock screen.

For sleep, keep the volume low and wear earbuds that feel comfortable when you lie down. A low volume is enough to hear the tones, and it is easier on your ears over a long session.

Breathe Along With the Circle

The circle in the middle of the player grows and shrinks slowly on a 10-second cycle. It grows for about 4 seconds and shrinks for about 6 seconds. Breathe in as it grows, and breathe out as it shrinks.

It never flashes or moves at the speed of the beat, because fast flashing can be a risk for people with epilepsy. If your device is set to reduce motion, the circle stays still.

The file is a 128 kbps MP3, which means 128 kilobits of sound data each second, a normal size for music. It is saved as plain stereo, not "joint stereo", a space-saving trick that can blur small differences between the left and right sides. The beat depends on that difference, so we keep the two sides fully apart.

We checked an MP3 of each goal in a frequency analyzer, which shows the exact pitch of a sound. Every file matched the table above, for example 248.5 Hz on the left and 251.5 Hz on the right for Deep Sleep.

On our test computer in Chrome, making the MP3 took about 1 second per minute of sound. That means about 10 seconds for a 10-minute file and about 1 minute for 60 minutes. Phones are slower, so keep the tab open while it works.

The finished MP3 plays in any music app. If you set it to repeat, the sound fades out and back in between plays.

For a longer session, you can join two MP3s into one file, like a 20-minute Relax track followed by a 60-minute Deep Sleep track. You can also mix the beats under a voice recording you already made.

Do Binaural Beats Really Work?

A 2019 review of 22 studies by Garcia-Argibay and colleagues, in the journal Psychological Research, looked at this question. It found a medium-sized effect on anxiety, memory, attention, and how much pain people felt.

A 2023 review of 14 EEG studies by Ingendoh and colleagues, in PLOS ONE, found mixed results. EEG is a test that reads the electrical activity of the brain. The brain followed the beat in 5 studies, did not in 8, and gave mixed results in 1.

Put simply, the science on binaural beats is mixed. Treat them as a calm sound that many people like for sleep, focus, or rest, not as a medicine. Never stop any treatment because of them.
