Pi7's online metronome is a practice tool and click track generator in one page. Set your tempo, tap it out, or type a number. Then download the same click as an MP3 or WAV file. No signup. No upload. Nothing to install.

Start the Metronome in Two Clicks

  1. Set your BPM. Type a number, drag the slider, or tap the tempo button.
  2. Pick a time signature. Choose from 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, or 12/8.
  3. Hit Start. The beat dots light up on each downbeat.

We measured the timing. Clicks stay locked within a few milliseconds over 30 minutes.

What BPM Should You Practice At?

Start 20 to 30 percent below your performance tempo. Build speed from there.

NameBPM RangeFeel
Largo40-60Very slow, broad
Adagio66-76Slow, relaxed
Andante76-108Walking pace
Moderato108-120Moderate
Allegro120-156Fast, lively
Vivace156-176Brisk, bright
Presto168-200Very fast

Raise the BPM by 5 points at a time. Do this once you play a passage clean three times. Small steps beat big jumps.

Download a Click Track for Recording

Pick your bar count: 4, 8, 16, 32, or a custom number. Choose MP3 or WAV. Add a 1-bar count-in if you need one. Then hit Download Click Track.

The file ends exactly on the bar boundary. It loops clean in any DAW or recording software. No trimming needed. Drummers use it to record with headphones on. Home producers build song demos around it. Bands share one click track so everyone practices at the same tempo. You can merge the click with a backing track or loop it to any length in the other Pi7 tools.

Speed Trainer: Build Tempo the Right Way

Set a start BPM and a target BPM. Pick how many bars between each step up. The tool raises your tempo automatically as you play.

Drum teachers use this method to build speed. Most metronome apps charge extra for this feature. Pi7 gives it to you free, right in the browser. Set 80 BPM as your start and 120 as your target. The tool carries you there over 10 minutes. You never touch a setting.

Want a harder drill? Turn on the gap trainer in Advanced options. The click plays for 2 bars, then goes silent for 1. Hold your tempo through the silence. The beat dots keep moving so you can check yourself when the click returns.

Time Signatures and Subdivisions Explained Simply

The top number tells you beats per bar. The bottom number tells you the note value. 4/4 fits most pop and rock songs. 3/4 gives you a waltz feel. 6/8 and 12/8 suit ballads and folk music. Odd meters 5/4 and 7/8 cover jazz and prog practice.

Subdivisions split each beat into smaller parts. Eighth notes help you practice groove and feel. Triplets train your ear for swing rhythms. Sixteenth notes work best for fast passages. Start simple, then add subdivisions as you improve. Time signature and subdivision work together to shape the groove.

Need accents on beats 2 and 4? Tap any beat dot to change it. Each tap cycles the beat: accent, normal, then mute. Drummers use this for backbeat practice. It also builds clave and odd-meter groupings like 2+2+3.

Why This Metronome Does Not Drift

Most web metronomes use a simple timer. That timer slips when the browser gets busy. Pi7 schedules every click ahead of time. It uses the audio hardware clock, not the browser clock. Clicks stay accurate to the millisecond. This matters most at slow tempos, where every gap is easy to hear. You get no lag and no drift, even in long sessions.

Practice Anywhere - No App, No Signup

The metronome runs in your browser on desktop or phone. There is nothing to install. You do not need an account. There are no ads inside the tool. Everything happens on your own device. Want to record your practice? Open the Pi7 voice recorder in another tab.

One thing to know: keep the tab open and your screen on. Phones pause audio when the screen locks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download the click track as an MP3?

Yes. Pick your BPM, time signature, and number of bars. Choose MP3 or WAV. Hit Download Click Track. The file ends exactly on the bar boundary. It loops cleanly in any DAW. Add a count-in bar if you record to it.

How accurate is the tap tempo?

Tap 4 or more times and the tool averages your last taps. The BPM updates live as you tap. It resets if you pause for 2 seconds. This works well even in a noisy room. For exact values, type the number directly into the BPM display.

Does the metronome work on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Safari or Chrome. Tap Start. The click plays and the beat dots follow along. It works the same as on desktop. One limit: your phone pauses the sound if the screen locks. Keep the screen on while you practice.
